Czyją ręką zostało to uczynione?
Jeśli to miejsce nie powstało samoistnie, to ktoś musiał je stworzyć – i pozostawić zwierzę na pastwę losu. Kto mógłby to zrobić i w jakim celu? Myśl o celowym porzuceniu tej kruchej istoty w tak odludnym miejscu wzbudziła w Jonathanie złość, której nie potrafił ukryć. Znał ludzką bezduszność, ale to, co zobaczył, odbiegało od wszystkiego, z czym wcześniej się spotkał. Każdy ruch zwierzęcia – nerwowe drżenie, ciche westchnienie – tylko potęgował wrażenie, że nie jest to zwyczajny pies czy dzikie stworzenie. Coś było w nim inne.
