South Dakota – T. Denny Sanford – $1.4 Billion
T. Denny Sanford may own a bank, but these days he seems less interested in collecting money than giving it away. In 2014, Sanford pledged $125 million to Sanford Health–the hospital group named for him–to give its doctors greater access to genetic testing. All together, Sanford, who has signed the Giving Pledge, has given more than $600 million to the organization and also supported the Mayo Clinic and steam-research at U.C. San Diego.
