Peter, choć miał za sobą wiele przygód jako ekspert od dzikich zwierząt, poczuł, jak serce bije mu mocniej, gdy snop światła z latarki wreszcie rozjaśnił najgłębsze zakątki studni. Dziwne odgłosy, które wcześniej wydawały się ledwie szeptem – drobne trzepoty, szelesty – teraz odbijały się głośnym echem od zimnych kamiennych ścian, stając się niepokojąco wyraźne. Peter wstrzymał oddech, kierując promień światła w stronę źródła dźwięków, a jego puls przyspieszył gwałtownie. I wtedy je zobaczył. Dziesiątki drobnych, świecących oczu wyłoniło się z ciemności, wpatrując się w niego nieruchomo. Stworzenia, tajemnicze i nieznane, wiły się niespokojnie, ich obecność napawała go niewypowiedzianym lękiem. A gdy pierwsze fale przerażenia zaczęły ustępować, dotarło do niego coś jeszcze bardziej niepokojącego – nie był tam sam.
