Peter zniknął w ciemnej otchłani studni, a każda upływająca sekunda zdawała się trwać wieczność. Serce Hanny biło jak oszalałe. Czeluść wydawała się bezdenna, wypełniona czarną pustką, a jedyne, co docierało do jej uszu, to przytłumione odgłosy ostrożnych ruchów Petera, oddalających się z każdym metrem. Jej dłonie kurczowo trzymały śliską od potu linę, zdeterminowane, by jej nie puścić. Nagle, bez żadnego ostrzeżenia, lina szarpnęła się gwałtownie, niemal wyrywając się z jej palców. Hannie wydawało się, że węzeł był bezpieczny, ale teraz wiedziała, że nie był wystarczająco mocny. Strach ścisnął jej serce, kiedy desperacko próbowała ponownie złapać linę – ale było już za późno. Peter znajdował się zbyt głęboko, a ona stała bezsilna, niezdolna, by mu pomóc.
