Im głębiej wchodzili w mroczny las, tym wyraźniejsze stawały się rozpaczliwe krzyki. Gdy dotarli do krawędzi starej, rozpadającej się studni, odkryli źródło niepokojących dźwięków. Coś – lub ktoś – spadł na dno studni, a wołania rozlegały się echem z głębi. Niedźwiedź, patrząc na nich z wyraźnym zrozumieniem, jakby prosił o pomoc. Studnia przypominała czarną przepaść, a Hanna poczuła chłodny podmuch wilgotnego powietrza wydobywający się z jej wnętrza. Choć nic nie mogli dostrzec w mroku, przeszywające krzyki nie pozostawiały wątpliwości – ktoś tam był, uwięziony. Peter szybko sięgnął po mocną linę. Jego głos był zdecydowany, gdy oznajmił: “Zejdę na dół.” Hanna zawahała się, ogarnięta falą strachu, próbując przygotować się na to, co mogło ich tam czekać.
