Why the Amish Are Laughing All the Way to the Bank
Memories Without the Canvas
When it comes to art, the Amish have a unique perspective that might surprise you—they don’t allow paintings or images of people. It’s not for lack of creativity; the Amish appreciate art deeply and many are talented musicians and writers. But when it comes to portraits, they hold a firm line.
The reason? They believe that a picture or painting of a person becomes a graven image, something that goes against their values. Instead, memories become the way they hold on to loved ones. For the Amish, these memories are pure and unembellished, capturing the essence of a person without needing a canvas or frame.
