With his usual smirk, my stepdad stood off to the side, fully expecting me to announce some insignificant detail. His arrogance was so thick he didn’t even consider the possibility of anything else. As the room quieted, the tension grew. I held my documents firmly, ready to expose the truth.
The speech I delivered seemed to put the guests at ease. I reminisced about the house’s history and childhood moments I’d shared with my real dad. Everyone smiled, caught up in the sentiment. Meanwhile, I saw my stepdad’s attention begin to slip. His smug look turned to confusion, utterly unaware that I hadn’t even started to reveal the real surprise.
