Mary Hopkin – Born in 1950
Before talent shows took over television, Mary Hopkin became a star the old-fashioned way, through pure talent and a bit of luck. Discovered by model Twiggy and signed to The Beatles’ Apple Records in 1968, she shot to fame with the heartfelt ballad “Those Were the Days,” which sold millions and topped charts around the world.
Produced by Paul McCartney, the song became one of the biggest hits of the late 1960s. She later represented the UK in the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest with “Knock, Knock Who’s There?”, finishing second. With her angelic voice and timeless melodies, Mary’s music still carries that nostalgic 1960s magic.
