If you watched British television in the 1970s and 1980s, Thelma Barlow was a familiar presence in your living room. She became a national treasure playing Mavis Riley on “Coronation Street,” a role she held from 1971 to 1997. Her gentle humour and sweet, slightly nervous charm made Mavis one of the show’s most beloved characters.
After leaving the soap, she joined “Dinnerladies” in 1998, working alongside Victoria Wood and proving her comedy timing was as sharp as ever. Before fame, she worked as a secretary and stage actress, which makes her rise even more impressive. Thelma’s warmth and wit made her unforgettable in British pop culture.
