Helen Shapiro – Born in 1946
Sure, we’ve heard about Tommy Steele, but on the female end of things, Helen Shapiro was Britain’s teenage singing sensation. At just 14, she topped the UK Singles Chart with “You Don’t Know” and followed it with another hit, “Walking Back to Happiness.” With her deep, soulful voice and beehive hair, she became a household name in the early 1960s.
She even toured with The Beatles in 1963, before they became global icons. Her film appearances in “It’s Trad, Dad!” and “Play It Cool” cemented her pop-star image. By the 1980s, Helen turned her focus to jazz and gospel, proving that true talent can shine across any genre or generation.
