A sua fortuna estimada em 10 milhões de dólares, deu-se por meio da ganância e exploração desenfreada de animais selvagens. Atualmente, Joe está atrás das grades, respondendo por diversas acusações e uma pena de 22 anos a cumprir. Seu antigo zoológico passou a pertencer à sua maior rival, Carol Baskin. Ela recentemente vendeu a área com inúmeras restrições para que o local não volte a ser um zoológico.
