Robert Downey Jr. divide seu tempo atuando, cantando e produzindo filmes. O ator virou um dos mais bem pagos de Hollywood devido ao grande sucesso de sua representação do herói Homem de Ferro, no Universo Cinematográfico da Marvel. Apenas o filme Vingadores: Ultimato rendeu, supostamente, $75 milhões para ele, em 2019, de acordo com a revista Guardian.
Desde 2018, as produções de Downey Jr. arrecadaram mais de $4,5 bilhões em vendas de bilheteria nos Estados Unidos. Fora da Marvel, ele também recebeu muito por outros filmes: ele foi pago $15 milhões para ser Sherlock Holmes em Sherlock Holmes: O Jogo de Sombras, em 2011.
