Most litters fall between five and six pups, though every so often, nature likes to surprise you. Mrs. Thompson sat just out of the way, lips pressed tight, counting under her breath with every new arrival. Lola powered through, steady and focused, barely lifting her head between contractions. Dr. Greene hovered nearby, silent and alert, letting her lead but ready if anything turned.
No one spoke much. The only sounds were soft whimpers, shuffling feet, and the wet hush of new life. With each puppy, the tension loosened a little, but no one dared assume it was the last. All eyes stayed on Lola, waiting for what came next.
