Most litters fall between five and six pups, though every so often, nature likes to surprise you. Mrs. Thompson sat just out of the way, lips pressed tight, counting under her breath with every new arrival. Lola powered through, steady and focused, barely lifting her head between contractions. Dr. Greene hovered nearby, silent and alert, letting her lead but ready if anything turned.
