Jest znana ze współpracy z niemieckim reżyserem Rainerem Wernerem Fassbinderem, z którym współpracowała przy aż 15 filmach.
Rola Marii Braun w filmie “Wesele” przyniosła jej uznanie na całym świecie oraz docenienie w postaci nagród w branży filmowej. Schygulla jest uważana za jedną z najlepszych aktorek w Europie.
