Wszechstronnie uzdolniony artysta: pianista, kompozytor muzyki, dyrygent aranżer znany ze stworzenia oprawy muzycznej dla wielu kultowych filmów, jak chociażby “Miś”, czy “Co mi zrobisz jak mnie złapiesz”. Jerzy Derfel współpracował z wybitnymi polskimi artystami, m.in.: Wojciechem Młynarskim, Wojciechem Połomskim, Danutą Rinn, jak również Ireną Santor.
Skomponował muzykę do ponad 200 popularnych polskich piosenek, czym zapisał się złotymi zgłoskami (albo nutami) dla rodzimej kultury. Jest absolwentem Państwowej Wyższej Szkoły Muzycznej w Warszawie w klasie fortepianu. Jako młody człowiek założył zespół jazzowy o nazwie “Flamingo”, ale następnie zadedykował swoją twórczość głównie komponowaniu.
