María Elena Holly and Buddy Holly – 1 year
Along with Pattie Boyd, María Elena Holly is one of the few rock and roll wives to be immortalized in song. After coming to New York City from Puerto Rico, a young María Santiago was swept off her feet by rock star Buddy Holly while working as a receptionist. The pair became engaged on their first date and married just a few months later. Sadly, Holly died in a plane crash in 1959; decades later, singer Don McLean would refer to María Elena in his hit American Pie with the lyrics “I can’t remember if I cried when I read about his widowed bride.” These days, María Elena owns the rights to all of Holly’s intellectual property, an asset that has served as a life insurance policy for the widow.
