Pomimo posiadania dwojga sławnych rodziców-aktorów – Joela Graya i Jo Wildera – oraz dyplomu Manhatan’s Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre, Jennifer Gray spędziła trochę czasu pracując jako kelnerka, zanim osiągnęła wielki sukces aktorski w latach 80.
Swoją międzynarodową rozpoznawalność Jennifer zawdzięcza roli Baby Houseman w filmie Dirty Dancing z 1987 roku.
