Muchas personas la recuerdan por la película Cabaret. Incluso esta película le permitió ganar como mejor actriz un premio Oscar.
Algunos problemas en su vida, como la pérdida de su madre, fueron más que suficientes para que comience su adicción a drogas prescritas. Además de convertirse en una adicta a este tipo de drogas también acumuló una excesiva cantidad de cirugías estéticas. Últimamente, le ha realizado un homenaje en Hollywood a su madre al mostrarse con un mechón azul.
