When the vet walked in, a calm smile on his face, Hana’s heart leaped with a mixture of relief and anxiety. “You made it just in time,” he said, his voice even and reassuring. “You saved them.” Her shoulders relaxed, but her curiosity quickly took over. “What happened? What are they?” The vet leaned back, his brow furrowing as he spoke.

“They’re a rare hybrid—part wild dog, part bear.” He sighed, clearly perplexed. “I don’t know how they ended up in the well or why the bear risked everything for them. I guess that she lost her cubs and instinctively took these pups in as her own.”
