Para prosseguir uma carreira como ator, que foi algo que sempre amou, Patrick abandonou o ensino secundário. Admitimos que essa foi, provavelmente, a escolha mais acertada. Quando tinha 15 anos, começou sua carreira como ator de teatro, tendo depois continuado a obter novos papéis.
Patrick se tornou um nome familiar na série A Anatomia de Grey e a cada novo episódio sua conta bancária vai também aumentando. Sua mãe foi diagnosticada com câncer de ovário e morreu aos 79 anos, o que fez com que Patrick também se envolvesse na pesquisa sobre câncer.
