Harvey Keitel was a struggling court reporter who had the dream of becoming an actor. He worked hard, saved up his earnings and then did an audition for Martin Scorsese. It turned out he was a very talented actor and Scorsese cast him in multiple projects. He did go through a blip where he mainly just kept getting cast as a thug of sorts in movies, but he broke that mold too and went on to become a huge success. He’s also the co-president of the Actors Studio in Manhattan, along with Al Pacino and Ellen Burstyn.
