Online sports betting has become one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States. Millions of Americans now place bets from their phones in just a few taps. The rapid rise has created a thriving business, but it has also raised serious questions about its long-term effects on people and families.

Billionaire philanthropists John and Laura Arnold want those questions answered with solid research instead of assumptions. Through Arnold Ventures, the couple has committed $2.6 million to support new studies that will examine the hidden health, financial, and social risks tied to online sports betting. Their goal is simple: to provide lawmakers with reliable evidence before the industry grows even larger.

The new grants mark an important expansion of the couple's philanthropic work. Arnold Ventures has long invested in areas such as education, criminal justice reform, and research integrity. Now, sports betting has become another major focus as concerns continue to grow across the country.

Researchers from universities and policy organizations will receive funding to explore how gambling affects financial security, mental health, household stability, and consumer behavior. The findings could help shape future laws and regulations as more states continue to embrace legal sports betting.

The Booming Industry Is Raising Bigger Questions

Pavel  / Pexels / Sports betting changed dramatically after the 2018 Supreme Court ruling that allowed states to legalize sports wagering. Since then, mobile betting apps have made gambling easier than ever before.

Fans no longer need to visit casinos because betting now happens from living rooms, stadium seats, and even during live games. Total sports wagers climbed from $4.9 billion in 2017 to more than $121 billion in 2023. By 2024, states had collected nearly $3 billion in tax revenue from legal sports betting, showing just how quickly the industry had expanded.

The popularity extends far beyond major sporting events. Nearly half of all men between the ages of 18 and 49 reportedly have an active online sports betting account. For many people, placing bets has become part of the regular sports viewing experience.

John Arnold believes policymakers need to recognize how much the gambling landscape has changed. He has said that lawmakers and regulators must respond to this new reality with facts instead of guesswork. The foundation hopes this research will provide the evidence needed to support smarter public policy.

The Arnolds are well known for their data-driven approach to philanthropy. As signatories of the Giving Pledge, they have already donated nearly half of their wealth to charitable causes. Their latest investment reflects a belief that research should guide decisions on issues that affect millions of Americans.

Studies Already Point to Financial and Health Concerns

The new research builds on a growing body of evidence suggesting that online sports betting carries significant risks. Several academic studies have linked legalized sports gambling with financial hardship, rising debt, and declining household stability.

One report from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that legalized online sports betting was associated with an additional 284,000 food-insecure households each year. The same research estimated an extra $130.2 million in annual healthcare spending connected to the financial and emotional stress linked with gambling.

The report also found that active sports bettors experienced a 10.5% decline in food sufficiency. Earlier research has connected sports betting with lower savings, higher rates of overdrawn bank accounts, and growing financial instability among regular gamblers.

Mental Health Is Becoming Part of the Conversation

Eca / Public health experts are also paying close attention to the connection between sports betting and mental health.

A long-term study found that increases in sports gambling often matched increases in alcohol related problems. Researchers observed that as gambling became more frequent, alcohol misuse also tended to rise. The relationship was especially noticeable among younger adults.

Other studies have found that legal online sports betting is associated with a 10% to 20% increase in binge drinking among young men. Researchers believe the easy availability of betting apps may encourage risk-taking behaviors that extend beyond gambling itself.

Young adults face particularly high risks. One study found that young adult sports bettors were 2.4 times more likely to experience gambling problems than people who did not place sports bets. Constant advertising, celebrity endorsements, and the close connection between sports and betting may contribute to that trend.
