In 2009, during a broadcast about Rodney Stanger, a suspect in the Molly Bish case, Channel 3 inadvertently displayed a hamster’s photo instead of the suspect’s mugshot. The mix-up occurred when the station’s image database misfiled the suspect’s picture under the name “Rodney Stanger,” which coincidentally matched the name of a hamster in their pet segment.
Viewers were puzzled by the unexpected rodent image accompanying the serious news story. The station promptly issued an apology, attributing the error to a technical glitch and emphasizing its commitment to accurate reporting. Thankfully, no one rounded up hamsters for a crime they didn’t commit, making this incident a memorable blunder in broadcast journalism.
