A banda teve grande popularidade nos anos 80, mas, devido a um mal-entendido com Eddie Van Halen, David decidiu deixar a banda. Desse modo, ele seguiu uma carreira solo. Alguns anos depois, David decidiu voltar às origens e se reuniu com a banda.
Ele já foi admitido em uma clínica de luxo para reabilitação de drogas, tal como muitos roqueiros acabam fazendo, devido ao vício em drogas pesadas. Ele decidiu se concentrar em sua carreira depois que ele saiu dali e hoje ele está muito melhor.
