Het voormalige model begon haar acteercarrière met de film Major League in 1989. In 1992 trouwde zij met scenarioschrijver Dan Gilroy, die zij ontmoette tijdens de opnames van Freejack. De 66 jaar oude actrice heeft in 2014 bekend gemaakt dat zij lijdt aan een bipolaire stoornis en daar al haar hele leven last van heeft.
Haar emotioneel turbulente jeugd heeft haar beschadigd en zij heeft dit jarenlang getracht op te lossen met medicatie. Rene is een vroom Christen. Zij is nog steeds actief in showbusiness en was voor het laatst te zien als Frigga, de moeder van de held in Thor en Thor: The Dark World. Haar huid en de rest van haar uiterlijk zijn haast smetteloos en ze ziet er prachtig uit voor een dame van haar leeftijd.
